Choosing Your ARE Exam Experience: PSI Test Center vs. Online Proctoring

One of the key decisions you'll need to make is where to take your exam: at a PSI Test Center or through online proctoring. This article explores both options, providing a comprehensive guide to help you make the best choice for your circumstances.

Option 1: Taking an Exam at a PSI Test Center

PSI Test Centers offer a controlled, standardized testing environment. If you prefer a traditional testing experience, this might be the right choice for you.

Before the Exam

Before you arrive at the test center, make sure to review the ARE 5.0 Guidelines and PSI's security measures. Remember to bring a valid, government-issued ID with a signature and a recent photograph.

During the Exam

Upon arrival, you'll check in with a test center administrator who will verify your ID, capture your photograph, and secure your personal belongings. You'll then be escorted to your testing station.

During the exam, you'll have access to an on-screen calculator and a digital whiteboard for notes. If you encounter any issues, raise your hand to alert a proctor.

After the Exam

Once you've completed the exam, you'll receive a provisional score report. Your official score will be reported to your NCARB Record within a week.

Option 2: Taking an Online-Proctored Exam with PSI

Online proctoring offers the convenience of taking the ARE from your own space. If you prefer flexibility, this might be the right choice for you.

Before the Exam

Before your exam, you'll need to ensure your testing environment meets the necessary requirements. This includes a quiet, well-lit room with a clean desk or table, a reliable internet connection, and a computer with a webcam and microphone.

During the Exam

You'll check in with a proctor via your webcam. The proctor will verify your ID, review the rules, and ask you to show your testing environment.

During the exam, you'll have access to an on-screen calculator and a digital whiteboard for notes. If you encounter any issues, use the chat function to communicate with your proctor.

After the Exam

Like the test center option, you'll receive a provisional score report upon completion, and your official score will be reported to your NCARB Record within a week.
